White Mountain Peak White Mountains Wilderness |
September 6, 2015
Another notch on our belt!
The road north — 18 miles of it
Another blogger has described that route as "requiring either a
high-clearance vehicle or a lot of patience". The latter
is our only option.
Our orange-and-blue campsite is on the left
The destination comes into view — distant view
Entering the wilderness area ⇔
One of us is spending a lot of time on his knees today, resting
Modern measurements place the summit at 14,252 feet
The cyclist is giving his doggie some water
Chalfant Valley to the northwest
Southwest view
To the north
Nevada is just seven miles east
As we start down:
They are still coming up in droves
The White Mountains are comprised primarily of
sedimentary rock — in other words, ocean sand
White Mountain Buckwheat is found only in this range
The upcoming hill is only 200 feet
It still is two miles over to the observatory
The final climb is about 250 feet
One of the better sections of road
§: Another blogger suggests hiking times of 3-4 hours up and
3 hours down; that's what we did. For more pics and info, look here:
