VARIATIONS ON A THEME OF CHOPIN Federico Mompou
Mompou gave his first piano concert in 1905, at age 15.
Although not known as one of the world's great composers, he was highly respected
by his peers and received accolades from several national governments.
This work, based upon Chopin's Prelude in A, opus 28 #7, began as a
proposed 1938 collaboration with the great cellist Gaspar Cassado. After that
project was abandoned, a score for solo piano finally was completed and published
in 1957.
Mompou's impressionistic harmonies are not for everyone; yet his unique and exquisite chord constructions serve as inspiration for my own compositional efforts.
