Ted's Hiking World White Rocks
Snow Canyon State Park, Utah

October 9 2017

Yesterday afternoon, I embarked upon a 12-day whirlwind bucket-list hiking tour encompassing five states.  My first outing is in Snow Canyon State Park, near St. George, Utah.  I did a pair of walks here two years ago, but there is unfinished business.

Coming in via the north gate, I deposit six dollars at the self-pay kiosk, then drive half a mile to the traihead.

The walking starts here

That looks like a fun combination

Most of the rocks around here are red sandstone or black lava, but just ahead is a distinct grouping of starkly white ones.  A ten-minute walk gets me to the base of the formation.

The couple with the teardrop trailer is just ahead of me

*
These rock contours are the same as on the red ones

It is but a short climb up the western wall to the edge of a canyon.

End of the line

The other two are just starting down

I would like to climb the rocky slope.  It doesn't look too steep, and I am wearing my special slickrock boots; but there also is a fierce breeze.  Not wishing to temp the fates, I must pass on an attempt to scale the near high-point.

*
I would love to scramble around up there, but not today

There is little left to do but to head back.

§: Well, this walk proved even shorter than was anticipated; but it had to be done.  Two more items await me in this park today.
