Ted's Hiking World Tamanawas Falls
Hood River National Forest, Oregon

August 10, 2013

I had planned to hike the Cooper Spur today, on the north slope of Mount Hood itself; but the access road is closed for the remainder of the season for a tree-removal operation, according to a ranger.  These falls, just a few miles down the Mount Hood Highway, also are on my bucket list.

Getting started

*
It's a bit dark in here

After ten minutes of walking, I am treated to a view of the highway.  Soon I encounter a bridge, however, where the trail turns and follows the creek away from the road.

*
Not that way
*
This is more like it

I have to leave the trail in order to get past a couple who are arguing loudly about something.  Gee, this is supposed to be a happy place.

*
Cold Spring Creek

At the edge of a talus jumble, the trail has been re-routed through the rock pile.  That seems rather strange, but I go where they tell me.  Perhaps the other path has been blocked by a rockslide.

*
Going straight through instead of up and around

In a short two miles, the destination appears, and it is beautiful!

*
Tamanawas Falls

The waterfall itself resembles Vernal Fall in Yosemite.

*
Magnificent

It appears that there is a way to scramble up and behind the falls.  Naturally, I must do that.  I see that a few folk are up there already.

* *

If they can do it, so can I?

Now I begin to suffer the folly of being improperly prepared for what purportedly was to be a simple stroll in the forest.  Not only did I wear my Keen boots, but I didn't even bother with a hiking pack.  Now I must negotiate mud and sharp, wet talus boulders with no foot traction; and having a camera dangling from my neck is not helpful, either.  Sufficient care saves the day, however.

*
This is why I go hiking

After watching the others depart, it is my turn.

*
Going downhill is more difficult
*
Most do not brave the final ascent

*
A final portrait

*
Another couple will give it a try

The return trip is dispatched without incident.  Plenty of other visitors are on their way up the trail.

Nice colors in the rock

§: What a delightful outing!  Being able to get behind a waterfall always is special.
