COMPROMISES & CONCERNS

During this reopening period, we shall lean towards an abundance of safety for our players,
and it is hoped that our adopted protocols can stay ahead of disruptions and facilitate the
smooth daily operations that our players have come to expect.  We cannot, of course, guarantee
that the club will not be closed down again or have restrictions placed upon it; but we shall deal
with those issues should they occur.  We cannot cover all contingencies, nor will we try to do so;
be very aware that playing bridge at the club is not free of risk.  If you feel at all uncomfortable
with these arrangements, please play online instead.

While the robust United States vaccination campaign has sped the nation’s recovery, the virus has repeatedly confounded expectations.  New variants keep popping up and probably will continue to
do so in the months ahead, as long as large swaths of the planet remain unvaccinated.  Certain
Immuno-compromised individuals may be fully vaccinated, yet have few or no antibodies.  "Breakthrough" infections, albeit in small numbers, can afflict even the fully vaccinated.  More
information is surfacing on "long Covid sufferers" who were previously sick  or even asymptomatic,
but are now weathering symptoms.  In addition, there is the risk of Covid-19 merging with the flu
in the coming season.  Uncertainties abound for both the players and the Bridge Center.

AT THE CLUB

For Face-to-Face bridge, we are requiring all players, instructors and directors to provide proof of
completed vaccination
(including two weeks elapsed time after the last shot) — two shots each
for Pfizer and Moderna, one for Johnson & Johnson.  Should a booster shot become necessary
in the fall, documentation of that procedure will be added to what is already on file.  Wearing a
face mask is optional for most players.

DOCUMENTATION  (guidelines from the California Department of Public Health)

Any of the following is acceptable (see me if you have some unusual medical conditions):

  1. Vaccination card showing the name of the person vaccinated, brand of vaccine provided,
and the date of the last administered dose.
  2. Photo of a vaccination card as a separate document.
  3. Paper documentation of vaccination from a healthcare provider.
  4. Photo of a vaccination card stored on a smartphone or tablet.  In this case, please email
a copy in advance to the club webmaster (ted@tedmuller.us).

For the first week, starting on July 5, we ask all players to arrive half an hour early to process
the necessary documents.  You also will be asked to sign a liability waiver.  e.

FINALLY..

We regret all this paperwork and protocols, but feel it is important that our members feel
secure when playing bridge. The safeguards provided at the Bridge Center should allow us to
pursue our pastime without incident for the foreseeable future.

Be healthy and stay well!

Albert Chow
