May Lake to Sunrise Trailhead Yosemite National Park |
DAY #4 - July 17, 2026
This is just a shorter 'get back to the car' day; so right after a great breakfast that did include scrambled eggs this time, we head out.
Somewhere in here I miss a non-intuitive sharp turn in the trail, causing us to
cross-country our way downhill for a quarter-mile; but that's just part
of the fun and is to be expected on a Ted-Hike.
Monty Marmot invariably likes to feign disinterest in humans
One guy is ready for the rain; but is his equipment worth the effort?
More problematical cobblestones
After little more than a mile, we reach Tioga Road; but this is not our parking lot. In fact, we aren't even halfway to the car.
Dave humorously observes to the others that everyone is ignoring the red sign
There is quite a bit of old asphalt on the trail, which means that we are traversing a segment of the original Tioga Road. Doubtless it was re-routed (more than sixty years ago) so as to include the unique view from Olmsted Point.
First view of Tenaya Lake, below its namesake peak
A partially hidden ATT cell-phone tower
I had been mildly concerned about having inadvertently left a small piece of jerky inside the car, but I see that all is well.
Also, today's air quality is the best I have seen in the park in twenty years or more; this is a good way to end our odyssey.
Half Dome from Olmsted Point never has looked better
§: And yes, there is no 'a' in 'Olmsted'. I hope that Dave
enjoyed his first-ever High Sierra Camp experience; I know that the rest of
us did. The last two days of trail were sub-par, but the first two days
more than made up for that. We will be putting in our bids for next
season's lottery, in November.
