Ted's Hiking World Fisher Towers
Colorado Waterway, Utah

April 26, 2021

This is Day #7 of the Utah Excursion.  Only two friends will join me on this, our last outing in the Moab area.  That is something of a shame if only because Highway-128 east of Moab is one of the most beautiful drives in the country.  The others don't know what they are missing.

I also have some unfinished business on today's trail; and if we are lucky, some rock climbers will be around as well.

Getting started

*
Down we go

*
The tallest one is the famous Corkscrew

*
Kingfisher Tower on the left

*
Eileen and Paul, the two other diehards of our group, have been on every hike.

*
Base of the Corkscrew

Well, no climbers are in evidence today, and that's too bad; for this is an especially exciting place for viewing their activity.

*
Pale Evening Primrose

*

*

*
A great cliff-side walk

*
Cottontail and Echo Towers

On my first visit here, I inexplicably stopped at this point; on my second outing, my companion and I were turned back by unseasonably cold weather.  Today, we will not be denied.

We all are breaking new ground now

*

*
Spectacular

* *

Starrush Whitetop

*
At trail's end

*
Those formations are featured in many movies

*
I finally got to the end, for the first time!

*
The venerable Colorado River winds down from the Rockies

*
Thicksepal Cryptantha

*

*

*
This is why I go hiking

*
The Titan, about 900' high, is the tallest free-standing monolith in the United States

*
Stemmy Four-nerve Daisy

* *

*

*

*

*
No slip-ups permitted here

*

*

*
Northwest Indian Paintbrush

*
Santa Barbara Milkvetch
*
Skyrockets

*

*
The crux of the mission

Note the metal handhold just above the ladder — a very welcome addition that was not there three years ago.

*

*

*
The climbing area is known as Ancient Art

*
Some gargoyles and three visible arches

*
Basket of Gold
*
Nineleaf Biscuitroot

*

*

*

*

*

---

On the return, it is obligatory to visit the home of what might well be the best western-movie museum to be found anywhere.

*
Red Cliffs Lodge
*

*
Heading for the eating pavilion
*
A remarkable collection of old-west memorabilia

§: There is no place like this one.  I am so please finally to have completed this walk; much of the best scenery can be viewed only on the second half of the trail.
