Ted's Hiking World Hunter Canyon Arch
near Moab, Utah

October 16, 2017

Day-8 of the Fall Bucket List Tour begins on Kane Creek Road, which runs south from Moab along the Colorado River.  This gorgeous byway is a worthwhile destination in itself, but I must find someplace to hike.

*
It gets even better than this

I am looking for the trailhead to Funnel Arch.  I scramble up a couple hundred feet at a "Day Use Only" turnout, but cannot locate a trail.  As I cannot be sure that this is even the right spot, I opt for Plan-B.

*
This might or might not be the trailhead

Down a couple more miles is the well-signed Hunter Canyon.  I know that I will find something here.

*
There are just a few campsites near the road

Starting up the trail

*
The canyon is beautiful this morning

I have seen three other hikers so far, and it's early yet.

*

*
I see something in the high rocks back there

*
Rabbit Brush
*
Tansyleaf Tansyaster

*
Prickly Pear Cactus
*
Evening Primrose

*
There's a spring here

*
A beautiful alcove

The only way to continue upstream is through a nifty hole in the rocks.

*
This is fun

Just beyond the tunnel is what I've been looking for:

*
Hunter Arch

Wow!  That's quite something.  The opening looks to be perhaps 75 feet high.  I suppose that I could get closer to it, yet I am content with the photos I have.

*
A double mini-arch

*
That looks like poison oak, which they call poison ivy around here

*
Last look at the arch

*
Following the other side of the creek bed

Beautiful

§: Mission accomplished.  This canyon is a very pleasant, albeit quite short, stroll.

On the way back to town I wave bravely at the Pritchett Canyon Trailhead, because that's where I broke my wrist three years ago.  Somewhat farther on is the Moon Flower Canyon Picnic Area.  Right in front of it is a nice petroglyph panel that hasn't been vandalized too much.
