Slogging up the talus

I subsequently found a website detailing how the Forest Service has re-routed the trail so as to eliminate the "obnoxiously steep climb north of Penner Lake".  Well, the route we actually took was even steeper than that!

I visited this nearby lake just five days later, on a different trail:

*
Upper Rock Lake, and Sierra Buttes to the north

The Sierra Buttes are but twelve miles distant, if you can fly; otherwise, it's fifty miles.

§: The heat got to me today as well; I needed far more rest stops than usual.
